In 1859 Versailles was provided a new hydraulic machine to satisfy its needs for drinking water. The machine was situated at Marly on the bank of the River Seine. In the second half of the nineteenth century, the Seine waters became progressively polluted with industrial, urban, and domestic discharges. This pollution raised once again the so much debated issue of drinking water quality in Versailles and neighboring communities.
