Living on Coral Time: Debating Conservation in the Anthropocene

Abstract

Coral scientists are currently facing an existential crisis: their organisms, reef-building corals who have existed on earth for nearly 250 million years, are dying en masse because of human-induced changes to their environments. How do these scientists plan to save corals? My contribution argues that this scientific community is polarized into two emotional extremes, hope and despair, signifying a rift between traditional conservation and interventionist approaches to conservation.
