Abstract

This paper examines the occurrence of pests and disease in tobacco farming in Southern Rhodesia from 1893 to 1940. It argues that diseases and pests became more widespread around 1927 as a result of acreage expansions. Field and nursery spraying using arsenic poisons became widespread to control these pests and diseases resulting in the contamination of the environment and death of livestock.
