
Carrión's disease has long been understood as a pathology associated with the Peruvian Andes, as well as a symbol of Peru's ability to produce, in Marcos Cueto's words, “scientific excellence in the periphery.” Nonetheless, what is now known as a widespread disease in different parts of the Andean space was historically a shared experience between humans and insects, both in its impact on health and in the chronicling of its modern history.
