The history of beverage packaging in Sweden reveals a shift from refillable standardized containers to disposable materials. As the problems with single-use packaging became apparent, the state implemented anti-littering laws, garbage bins, and deposit refund systems rather than restrictions on disposables. After coexisting during the twentieth century, the brewing industry phased out the refill system at the end of 1990s, to avoid responsibility and costs for empty containers and boost profits. Today, only a few places still sell the refillable bottles, but the deposit refund system no longer accepts them.
