Abstract

The Galapagos Islands National Park, which was established in 1959, shelters Charles Darwin’s showcase of evolution and has become a testing field for international nature conservation concepts.

Elke Ackermann, Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG), Germany

Elke Ackermann is a Doctoral Researcher at the Leibniz-Institute of European History in Mainz. Her PhD-project is about the history of the Galapagos Islands as UNESCO World Heritage Site from 1949 to 1998 within the Research Group “Knowledge of the World – Heritage of Mankind: The History of UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage”. Elke holds a BA in Latin American Studies (University Eichstätt-Ingolstadt and Universidad Iberoamericana Puebla) and an MA in World Heritage Studies (Technical University of Cottbus and Universidad Central de Venezuela Caracas).
