Mark Sokolsky is a PhD candidate at the Ohio State University. His research examines colonization and environmental change in the Russian Far Eastern territory known as Primorye during the late imperial and early Soviet eras.
Imperial tensions in the Russian Far East led Russian officials to create a fishing fleet ex nihilo as a means to ousting foreign (primarily Chinese and Japanese) fishermen from strategically valuable waters.
